NEXT STEP PRODUCE
Charles County, MD
Next Step Produce is located in Charles County, MD, 50 miles south of Washington, DC. Of the farm's 80 certified organic acres, about 15 are seasonal organic vegetables and a young persimmon/kiwi/fig orchard. Next Step Produce's bounty is sold at the Dupont Circle farmers market in Washington, DC, is used to supplement a CSA in Vienna, VA, and is sold to a few local restaurants. Full-time farmers Heinz Thomet, Gabrielle Lajoie and their children run the farm with additional seasonal help.
Next Step is "committed to growing excellent vegetables in harmony with nature", which they do by working toward a truly sustainable farming system that minimizes outside inputs, incorportates the production of high-quality compost amended with trace elements, and promotoes beneficial soil life. The outcome is truly nutritious, great-tasting vegetables. Next Step Produce is always seeking people who are active believers in an alternative food system, and in the physical, mental, and emotional attributes that make such a system viable.
